Crop Over is Barbados' largest national festival and one of the oldest festivals in the region. It was first started by slaves on plantations in the eighteenth century to celebrate the end of the sugar cane harvest. Crop Over has its roots in both the African Yam Festival and the English Harvest Home festival.
